GIZDeutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a public enterprise of the Republic of Germany at the federal level. It was founded in 1975 as an institution under private law and is based in Eschborn near Frankfurt am Mein.

As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, GIZ supports the efforts of the German government aimed at reaching the goals of its development policy, providing in the process sustainable and viable solutions for political, economic, environmental and social development in the globalised world.

GIZ promotes complex social reform process, often operating under difficult conditions. Its main objective is to improve people's living conditions on a sustainable basis.

Our primary competence is capacity development. Capacity herein means the capability of people, organisations and societies to shape their own development in a sustainable manner. This entails identification of a problem and subsequent development and successful implementation of strategies aimed at finding solutions.

We support developing countries and newly established states in their efforts to build their own capacities and, in this regard, we guide the processes of learning and changes, respectively.

The German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is the principal GIZ's client. The organisation also operates on behalf of other German ministries, partner-country governments and international clients, such as the European Commission, the United Nations or the World Bank, as well as on behalf of private companies.

The fundamental principle underlying the operation of GIZ is that of public benefit. Any surpluses generated are channelled back into its own international cooperation projects for sustainable development.

GIZ is present in over 130 countries in Africa, Asia, South America, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, as well as Europe, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The company has offices in 87 countries of the world, employing about 13,000 people, of whom 10,000 are locals. At the headquarters in Eschborn and other locations throughout Germany, there are 1,700 employees.
